Massive unused Tipton plant goes back on the market

July 11, 2012

The never-occupied 781,500-square-foot facility is on the market for $39.5 million, a steep discount from the original cost of roughly $100 million. The plant was built to manufacture auto transmissions. A plan to make solar panels at the site also collapsed.

Hoosier Lottery asks vendors to bid on work

July 11, 2012

The primary goal of the contract is to boost the lottery's net income, which dropped from $218 million in fiscal year 2006 to $188 million during fiscal year 2011 — a 14 percent decline.

“Treasure Hunt”

July 11, 2012

July 14

Indiana Landmarks Center/Morris-Butler House and environs

The treasure hunt of the title refers to the Old Northside neighborhood garage sales that will be popping up on Saturday. The reason that’s worth noting here is because these lawn blowouts round out an event focused on two of the area’s landmark buildings, which will be the hubs for live music, an antique and collectible market, building tours, games and more free (unless you buy something) events. Details here.

“Singin’ in the Rain”

July 11, 2012

July 12

Various locations

The clouds might not be giving us enough rain this summer, but Fathom Entertainment will supply its share when it celebrates the 60th anniversary of the movie musical classic “Singin’ in the Rain” with screenings at AMC Indianapolis 17, Regal Galaxy 14, Rave Metropolis 18, and Goodrich Brownsburg 8 and Hamilton 16. Pre-show bonus features include an on-screen interview by Turner Classic Movie’s Robert Osborne with co-star Debbie Reynolds. Details here.

Tom Wopat

July 11, 2012

July 13-14

Cabaret at the Columbia Club

You’d think the fact that I have not seen a single episode of “The Dukes of Hazzard” would leave me with no interest in seeing one of its stars, Tom Wopat, in his appearance at the Cabaret. You’d be wrong. That’s because I’ve seen him give terrific performances on Broadway in “A Catered Affair,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and the grossly underrated “Catch Me If You Can.” The guy can act. The guy can sing. And I’m looking forward to not only seeing the show but conducting a live Q&A with him after the Friday show. Plan to stick around. Details here. .

Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration

July 11, 2012

Various locations

July 12-22

Where to start? On film, the IBE Film Festival, July 14, includes one of my favorite documentaries in recent years: “Thunder Soul.” (See brief review here.) For celeb spotting, it’s hard to improve upon the July 20 Pacers Sports & Entertainment Corporate Luncheon with Harry Belafonte and Pam Grier. For music, there’s Gladys Knight and ConFunkShun on stage July 20. For sports fans, there’s the “Saving Our Youth” Celebrity Basketball Game featuring Reggie Wayne, Antoine Bethea, Bonzi Wells, Dru Hill and more. And that’s without even mentioning all the regular IBE activities going on inside the Indiana Convention Center July 21-22. Full schedule here.
