Residents file suit against apartment complex

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the owners of a Noblesville apartment complex after a June 10 fire destroyed more than 20 units and multiple cars. The flames broke out in a carport at Deer Chase Apartments, and fire crews had a hard time getting enough water pressure from complex hydrants. The suit says investigators discovered someone had partially closed the main water line to the complex. The lawsuit, on behalf of 80 to 100 residents, says apartment management had an obligation to make sure the hydrants were in working order.
 

Cheerleading coach pleads not guilty to seduction

June 21, 2012

A Shelbyville High School assistant cheerleading coach charged with child seduction pleaded not guilty in court Thursday morning. Megan Crafton, 22, was arrested on June 15 and preliminarily charged with the Class D felony. She is accused of having inappropriate sexual relations with a 17-year-old male student. She was not a teacher at the school and did not coach the student, but was charged because she was in a position of authority as a school employee.
 

Man charged with conspiracy in cop killing

June 21, 2012

The man accused of providing the gun to the man convicted of fatally shooting Indianapolis police officer David Moore in January 2011 was charged with conspiracy Thursday. Eric Jenkins, 53, is accused of providing a loaded handgun to Thomas Hardy, 61, who shot and killed Moore during a traffic stop in January 2011. Authorities said Jenkins knew Hardy was a convicted felon. Hardy was sentenced in April to life without parole.

Zionsville wins appeal in airport zoning dispute

The town now has zoning jurisdiction over Indianapolis Executive Airport, which is located within its borders following an annexation, but is operated by the Hamilton County Airport Authority.

Purdue officially makes Daniels its next president

As expected, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels will become the next president of Purdue University when he leaves office in January. Purdue officials introduced Daniels as the school's new leader Thursday following a vote by the board of trustees.

The city of Indianapolis granted preliminary approval for an eight-year tax abatement to Arcamed Inc., which plans to purchase $1.4 million in equipment to design and manufacture titanium and case-tray systems for surgical instruments.

Baby food maker adding 150 jobs in Lebanon

Skjodt-Barrett Contract Packaging said it plans to add the jobs by the end of September, about a year earlier than expected, due to increased demand for its products. The company has 100 employees.

Sprayer maker plans Mooresville expansion

Mooresville-based Equipment Technologies, which makes self-propelled sprayers for agriculture, says it plans to hire 56 new people by 2015 as part of an expansion.

Health insurer WellPoint Inc. said Wednesday it completed its purchase of contact lens retailer 1-800 Contacts Inc. at a reported price tag of $900 million.

Firefighters work to contain Avon spill

June 20, 2012

Firefighters spent Wednesday morning at the CSX Avon Rail Yard investigating a chemical spill. According to Avon fire officials, an unconnected rail car in an isolated part of the yard was leaking a small amount of a chemical called isobutylene, a highly flammable substance. Firefighters are monitoring air quality in the area to ensure the safety of nearby homes and businesses. Environmental cleanup company Summit Contracting is working with firefighters and CSX to mitigate the spill.

RW Armstrong becomes unit of New York engineering firm

RW Armstrong and Associates Inc., Indianapolis’ fourth-largest engineering firm, has completed a merger with CHA Consulting Inc. that makes the local company a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Albany, N.Y.-based business.

Shelbyville cheerleading coach arrested

June 20, 2012

A Shelbyville High School assistant cheerleading coach has been arrested after being accused of having inappropriate relations with a 17-year-old student. Megan Crafton, 22, was arrested and preliminarily charged with child seduction, a Class D felony. Shelbyville police said they received information about Crafton’s alleged relationship with the male student in early February and launched a long investigation. Authorities said Crafton turned herself into police custody.

Durham found guilty on all counts

U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett hailed the jury's decision, calling the case "the most significant piece of litigation the Southern District has seen in a generation." Tim Durham and co-defendants Jim Cochran and Rick Snow were handcuffed and taken to the Marion County Jail.
