Fire destroys east-side warehouse

September 27, 2013

A large, vacant industrial building went up in flames on the near-east side Wednesday evening, creating a thick black smoke plume that could be seen for miles. The warehouse at 3724 E. 9th St., near North Sherman Drive, has been empty since it was vacated by Continental Metal Products Inc. about 10 years ago. The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined. No injuries were reported.

 

Man arrested for impersonating police

September 27, 2013

An Indianapolis man was arrested Thursday afternoon after authorities said he impersonated a police officer during funeral ceremonies for officer Rod Bradway. Minh V. Nguyen, 38, was taken into custody just before a procession of police vehicles left downtown. Detectives noticed Nguyen standing in a full police uniform armed with two guns. However, the patch on his uniform was a generic emblem. Nguyen also had a Dodge Charger resembling those driven by undercover officers.
 

Remains found of man murdered in 1996

September 27, 2013

Remains found in a shallow grave near a Montgomery County farm in May have been positively identified through DNA testing as those of a Carmel businessman who was murdered in 1996, investigators said Thursday. Craig Roberts, 47, who owned a landscaping firm, disappeared before Thanksgiving nearly 17 years ago. Employee John David Smith was convicted of murdering Roberts in 2001 in a case based on circumstantial evidence. Smith, who is serving a 95-year-sentence, told investigators where to find the body.
