Man pleads guilty in 3-year-old’s death

An Indianapolis man pleaded guilty Monday to fatally beating his former girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter. Jose Cruz, 22, is to be sentenced Oct. 16. His plea deal calls for him to receive a sentence of 75 years in prison. Police say they found victim Carmen Ellis covered with bruises in August 2012 inside her mother’s apartment. The girl’s mother, Samantha Ellis, awaits trial on a charge of neglect for leaving her daughter with Cruz.

Police officer OK after shooting

September 24, 2013

An Indianapolis police officer has been released from the hospital after being shot in the leg Tuesday morning while responding to a disturbance at an apartment complex. Gregory Stevens was shot about 12:30 a.m. outside Greenway Apartments at 5300 E. 21st St. The suspected shooter, Charles Williams, 22, was in fair condition at Wishard Memorial Hospital after being shot at least seven times. Police say Williams refused to drop his weapon when they arrived at the scene, leading to a shootout. Stevens, a former U.S. Marine who spent three tours of duty in Iraq, is a four-year member of the force.

Car rear-ends Carmel bus

A car rear-ended a Carmel school bus Monday about 7:40 a.m. near Creekside Middle School, injuring the bus driver. Children had already been dropped off at Creekside before the accident near 126th Street and Shelbourne Road. The bus driver was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. The driver and a passenger in the car declined treatment.
 

Man dies in tractor accident

A Hendricks County man died Sunday after the tractor he was driving rolled over on top of him, trapping him in an irrigation ditch for several hours before he was found about 8 p.m. The 45-year-old man, a father of five, was mowing a field near Clayton when the accident happened. His identity was not released.
 

New IPS super begins work

September 23, 2013

Lewis Ferebee rode a school bus Monday on his first day as the superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools. Ferebee, 39, was selected from three finalists in August to replace Eugene White. His bus ride took him to Francis Scott Key Elementary School, near East 38th Street and Post Road.
