Motorcycle crash injures 4 in Franklin

September 21, 2011

Four people were taken to the hospital with major injuries after a motorcycle accident in Franklin. The incident, which took place just before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of U.S. 31, occurred when a motorcycle driven by 42-year-old Daniel Thompson crashed into two teenagers walking along the road near Franklin College. Thompson and his 22-year-old passenger, Kristina Lacefield, were thrown from the cycle. Thompson was flown to Methodist Hospital with critical injuries. Lacefield was transported to St. Francis Hospital with injuries to her hip and upper leg. A 16-year-old boy hit by the cyclist suffered a broken leg and foot, and the 18-year-old girl he was walking with sustained brain injuries. Police say Thompson had been drinking.

Murat Theatre

You don’t have to wait for this year’s Art vs. Art event to have an on-stage disc randomly determine the outcome of a live event. (Don’t know about Art vs. Art? Stay tuned.) This week, Elvis Costello will bring his Spectacular Spinning Songbook to the Murat, featuring classic songs, covers and lesser-known songs selected randomly by a turn of the wheel. Yes, longtime fans, “Alison” and “Pump It Up” are in the mix. Details here.

Clowes Hall

With all the Indianapolis Opera activity at the Basile Opera Center, let us not forget that the bread and butter for IO is still big productions of familiar operas. In this case, Jee Hyun Lim, who led New York City Opera’s “Butterfly” tour in Japan, Dublin and more, plays the title role opposite Garrett Sorenson, direct from the recent Broadway revival of “Master Class.” It’s Sorenson’s first time with IO and his first time playing Pinkerton, which should add a newcomer meets vet element to the inherent East meets West opera. Details here.

“Spring Awakening”

September 21, 2011

Sept. 22-Oct. 23

Phoenix Theatre

This week, the Phoenix Theatre does what the Broadway in Indianapolis series didn’t do: Bring Duncan Shiek’s Tony-award-winning musical to the Indianapolis stage. (The tour, in its later, non-Equity state, made it only to a one-nighter in Bloomington.) It’s about a bunch of teens wrestling with just about every teen problem, which makes it like many Phoenix shows—only this one is set in late-19th-century Germany and features an intense, rocking score with parental-warning lyrics. Yes, like the Broadway production, there is additional up-close-and-personal seating on stage. But to be part of that crowd, you have to wear black. Details here.
