There was concern, when the Palladium launched, that it would take arts and audiences away from downtown. Well, that may happen. But for now, it’s interesting to note that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concerts at Hilbert Circle Theatre with violin master Joshua Bell are sold out—but you can still get tickets to see the ISO and Bell at the Palladium. Schools big issue in primary elections

Public school referendums are in the spotlight during Tuesday’s central Indiana primary elections. Voters in Franklin Township, Perry Township and Avon will be asked to vote on a referendum asking for more property tax revenue to support local schools. Franklin Township’s superintendent said that, if the referendum fails, class sizes will increase, programs and services will be cut and jobs could be eliminated. Polls are open until 6 p.m.
 

Indy 500 security to be tightened

Those attending this year’s Indianapolis 500 should expect to see random vehicle checkpoints as part of a heightened security presence in the wake of Osama Bin Laden’s death. Marion County Public Safety Director Frank Straub said local, state, federal and Indianapolis Motor Speedway authorities are already talking about measures needed to assure that the crowd of about 250,000 people will be safe while enjoying the May 29 race. Among the measures: radiation detectors, license plate readers and the federal government's "See It and Say It" program, which will remind fans to report anything suspicious.

The Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. will press the board of Verizon Communications Inc. to tighten standards for executive pay when the New York company holds its annual meeting in Indianapolis this week.

Rupert Boneham has created a casino table game and is searching for investors to help market it. A portion of the game’s revenue will benefit his Indianapolis charity, Rupert’s Kids.

J.D. Byrider sold to private equity firm

The Indianapolis-based used-car chain has been acquired by Altamont Capital Partners near San Francisco, in a deal Byrider executives say will give the franchisor the necessary capital to grow.
