Condo project sparks interest in Fletcher Place: Property values rising as Villaggio takes shape

February 19, 2007

Revitalization efforts had been plodding along for years in the triangleshaped historic neighborhood known as Fletcher Place. The slower pace of development gave the neighborhood just southeast of downtown a lower profile than places like Chatham Arch and Lockerbie Square. But Fletcher Place is under the radar no more, thanks to a massive eight-story condo project known as Villaggio at Page Pointe. The 64-unit building-now the neighborhood’s tallest structure-looks like it could be in Florida, except its panoramic views capitalize…

Eli Lilly and Co. said today it will appeal a decision by Great Britain’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to not recommend its Alimta lung cancer drug. several hundred thousand square feet large and could cost tens of millions of dollars to build.

BEHIND THE NEWS: Private equity fever fuels talk of Brightpoint buyout

February 12, 2007

Brightpoint Inc. shares have shed 60 percent of their value since April 2006. But the distributor and logistics provider for the wireless phone industry continues to turn a tidy profit, and in recent months has cut a flurry of deals that bode well for the future. Don’t think the nation’s private equity fund managers haven’t noticed. Flush with billions of dollars to invest, they’re poring through spreadsheets in search of undervalued acquisition targets. So no one should be surprised that…

Indiana health provider says no to drug reps: Arnett joins others wary of industry marketing power

February 5, 2007

There truly is no such thing as a free lunch, or at least that’s what Arnett Health-System told drug company sales representatives last fall. The Lafayette-based system banned meals for doctors that were paid for by the salespeople, but it allowed them to continue to meet with physicians through appointments. Then that stopped Jan. 1. Now, Arnett also prohibits reps from making sales calls at its roughly 20 locations in Tippecanoe County and the surrounding area. No more free samples…

Comparing Chicago and Indianapolis corporate powerhouses in a financial Super Bowl is no contest, says Kiplinger, the personal finance and business forecast organization. Chicago wins by more than a touchdown. Both cities are economically diverse. In fact, Kiplinger noted, the cities are more alike than different when size and lake frontage are taken out of […]

University of Louisville prof lauds Indianapolis

January 22, 2007

Louisville struggles to attract high-end white-collar jobs because it’s stuck in a high-density, “almost European” neighborhood of competing cities that includes Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville, says Paul Coomes, a University of Louisville economist. Indianapolis attracts engineers, scientists and other professionals because its downtown is vibrant and, unlike Louisville’s, isn’t dissected by freeways, Coomes said in […]

New funding has Semafore set for trials: Local pharmaceutical company to test cancer drug on humans

January 22, 2007

Hours before the underdog Florida Gators were crowned college football champions, Joseph Garlich wore a blue shirt to support the team as it prepared to upset the Ohio State University Buckeyes. Garlich, who spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Florida’s School of Pharmacy, is equally optimistic his biotech firm is on the verge of achieving a milestone of its own. The northwest-side Semafore Pharmaceuticals Inc. should launch within a few weeks human trials of its…

January 22, 2007

Each month, leaders of some of the city’s most promising life sciences companies gather to share lunch, but they are more interested in getting an extra dollop of advice that might contain the ingredients for a thriving company. These 14 chief executives sharing their experiences with one another represent the city’s roster of life sciences firms that have received outside financing from venture capitalists. That means the fledgling enterprises are high-risk investments with the potential for above-average returns. And with…

Business elite back alternative high school: Catholic college-prep Cristo Rey puts students to work to earn and learn

January 15, 2007

Every other month, it seems, someone announces another promising alternative to the city’s public schools and their low achievement levels and high dropout rates. If it isn’t Indianapolis Public Schools announcing another specialty school within a high school, it’s a new charter school anointed by Mayor Bart Peterson-a number now approaching 20. So one could be forgiven for being a bit cynical about these schools, as parents who can afford to continue to leave the city for better schools. But…
