Carmel named ‘Best Place to Live’

August 20, 2012

Carmel has been named the “Best Place to Live in America,” by Money magazine, the publication announced Monday morning in a ranking of the country’s best small cities. The city of 80,100 just north of Indianapolis was praised for its strong economy, affordable homes, low taxes, excellent schools, bike paths and the new performing arts center. Neighboring Fishers was the only other Indiana city on the list, ranking 12th.
 

Carmel moves toward $183 million refinancing

Carmel police suspect teens in break-ins

Carmel police hope two arrests Monday will end a six-week string of daytime home burglaries. Two of three juveniles were taken into custody after witnesses say they saw them break into the back a home in the Walden Pond neighborhood near 99th Street and Westfield Boulevard at about 10:30 a.m. Before the break-in, the teens knocked on the doors of other homes and asked residents if they had seen a missing dog. Police say the method is similar to the approach used in multiple break-ins this summer in Carmel.

Armed robber sought in Carmel

Carmel police are looking for two suspects after an armed robbery. The victims told police that a brown Chevrolet Impala pulled up next to them at 10801 N. Michigan Road Tuesday night. Two men with guns got out of the car and demanded money. After the victims handed over a wallet and purse, the men drove away. No one was injured.
 

Burglaries on rise in Carmel

July 6, 2012

Carmel Police are warning residents about an increase in burglaries in the city. The city has received reports of at least 17 burglaries since June 1, including four over the July 4 holiday. In many of the burglaries, intruders knocked on the front door before breaking into unoccupied homes. If somebody answered the door, the suspects claimed to be selling magazines or looking for a lost pet.

Carmel police are looking for a burglary suspect after a 20-year-old said she woke up Wednesday morning to find a strange man in her parents’ home. The woman said he fled at about 8:30 a.m. after the two made eye contact. Investigators found evidence that the man had been through several rooms. Shortly after he fled, another Carmel house was broken into, and investigators believe the two cases are connected.

Kite Realty Group Trust is planning a Rivers Edge-like overhaul of two shopping centers it owns at 116th Street and Rangeline Road in Carmel. The Indianapolis-based real estate firm already has landed new tenants, including a natural and organic grocery store and a handful of restaurants.

School bus rams Carmel house

May 23, 2012

A school bus careened through a backyard and crashed into the side of a Carmel home about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. No students were aboard the bus when it crashed. Officials say the driver was alert and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Four family members were home at the time, but weren’t injured. The impact tore bricks and gutters off the side of the house in Tarkington Commons, near 131st Street and Gray Road. A cause for the crash wasn't immediately known.
 

16 minors arrested at Carmel bar

May 14, 2012

Sixteen minors were arrested and a Carmel bar was cited on multiple charges Saturday after police raided the tavern. The Double Apple Lounge in the 4000 block of West 96th Street was preliminarily charged with 16 counts of allowing a minor to loiter, five counts of sale of alcohol to a minor, and one count each of hindering enforcement, employment of minors, and failing to maintain employee records. Excise police said three underage girls were found in the kitchen, pretending to be cooks, even though the grill was cold. Police said several of the minors, age 15 through 20, had blood alcohol levels as high as 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit for driving. The Double Apple was cited on similar charges in January.

Lightning strike causes Carmel fire

A multimillion-dollar home in Carmel caught fire after lightning struck Wednesday night. Eight fire trucks were called to the home in the Laurelwood neighborhood near 106th Street and Ditch Road at about 7:30 p.m. The homeowners were able to escape but the home sustained significant damage.

Carmel arts center makes room for more sponsors

The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel expects the 2012-13 concert season, announced this week, to bring a healthy bump in sponsor revenue.
