SPORTS: Memo to IU: Hire the right people this time

March 3, 2008

Deadlines for a weekly publication are tricky. Sometimes when news breaks, you get lucky. Sometimes, you don’t. In this case, forgive me if I’m a little late to the parade and-following the elephants with broom and shovel-to the sorry mess involving the men’s basketball program at my alma mater, Indiana University. So, to sum up, this is what bothers me most: Everything. And who’s to blame? Everyone. It’s the culture. It’s the media. It’s gross mismanagement. It’s poor hiring. It’s…

SPORTS: IU’s basketball drama isn’t the only show in town

February 25, 2008

So much news, so little space. Over the last two weeks, there was that evolving situation involving the IU basketball coach. The Hoosiers, Butler, Purdue and Notre Dame made Indiana the only state with four teams ranked in the nation’s top 25. Butler climbed to No. 8, its highest ranking ever, and Purdue took the Big Ten lead under Matt Painter, at this point the odds-on choice for national coach of the year. My buddy and former colleague, Robin Miller,…

Sampson scandal may repel IU donors

February 25, 2008

Based on 50 conversations IU Foundation President Curt Simic had with donors the week after news broke of the potential firing
of men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson over alleged NCAA improprieties, the chief of Indiana University’s philanthropic
arm says he has little fear the latest athletic department controversy will affect financial support to the school.

Bond market turmoil could raise costs for stadium, other projects

February 25, 2008

The debt strategy Gov. Mitch Daniels’ top financial officials developed to save the state money on major projects like
Lucas Oil Stadium has turned sour.

SEC pushes Lilly, WellPoint for more info on executive pay: Two Indianapolis companies are among 350 queried

February 25, 2008

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission wants to know more about how Eli Lilly and Co. and WellPoint Inc. decide how to pay their top executives. The two Indianapolis companies exchanged letters last fall with the SEC. The federal agency requested more information about executive compensation from 350 of the nation’s largest public companies. The correspondence led Lilly to include more detailed information in a preliminary version of its proxy statement that it filed Feb. 6. WellPoint officials have promised…

IU players threaten boycott

February 22, 2008

CBS Sports this morning is reporting that Indiana University men’s basketball players are threatening to boycott the remainder of the season if coach Kelvin Sampson is forced out. Quoting unidentified sources, CBS Sports reported that players and IU Athletic Director…

IUPUI and IU business degrees

February 14, 2008

The undergraduate business program at IUPUI used to let in just about anyone. At one point, only the bottom
10 percent of a high school graduating class was steered to Ivy Tech or elsewhere.

Got a business degree from IUPUI? It…

Local tech leaders speaking today at IU

January 22, 2008

A pair of local high-tech heavyweights are scheduled to speak today at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Bob Laikin, CEO of Plainfield-based wireless device distributor Brightpoint Inc., will visit the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Bloomington as a distinguished entrepreneur-in-residence. Laikin will speak at a faculty lunch, then spend the afternoon visiting […]

IU takes statewide approach to life sciences pitch

January 21, 2008

For the last two months, two academics at Indiana University and Purdue University have been discussing how the institutions
can work together to rev up research in medicine and life sciences and, in the process, boost Indiana’s economy.

Colts land Meijer as stadium sponsor

January 14, 2008

A day after losing to San Diego in the National Football League playoffs, the Indianapolis Colts scored a victory off the field. The Colts announced another sponsorship deal for Lucas Oil Stadium – this time with retail chain Meijer. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer has signed as a founding partner for the new stadium, set to […]

SPORTS: Time for IU fans to memorialize Hep, then move on

January 7, 2008

The spirit of the dearly departed Terry Hoeppner, if not his presence, was palpable during the New Year’s Eve Insight Bowl at Tempe, Ariz. Those footballshaped “Hep” buttons were ubiquitous. The phrases “Play 13” and “Don’t Quit” could be heard repeatedly. At a pre-game pep rally in a Tempe park, thousands of IU faithful gathered so the Indiana football team could honor Hep’s tradition of The Walk. IU’s new president, Michael McRobbie, led the players and coaches through the back-slapping,…

Union push under way at 2 Indianapolis hotels: They would be first to unionize in central Indiana

December 24, 2007

Employees at two Indianapolis hotels have begun a push to unionize-a move that, if successful, would make the properties the only union hotels in central Indiana. Several workers at the downtown Westin and the Keystone Sheraton have met with representatives of New York-based Unite Here, a labor group that represents about 440,000 hospitality and textile employees nationwide. Both hotels are part of Bethesda, Md.-based Host Hotels & Resorts Inc.’s global portfolio. Backers said a union is needed to raise wages…

Colts announce final gate sponsor for new stadium

December 17, 2007

A day after the team clinched its division championship on the field, the Indianapolis Colts front office scored its final gate sponsor for the new Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts today announced a multi-year deal to make Sprint the stadium’s east gate sponsor. Though terms of the deal were not revealed, Colts officials told IBJ […]

Stadium adds Gregg to sponsorship roster

December 10, 2007

While the Indianapolis Colts steamroll their way toward the playoffs, the team’s sales staff is racking up its own successes. Today, Colts officials announced another multi-year, multi-million-dollar sponsorship deal for Lucas Oil Stadium, which is set to open next fall. Officials for locally based HHGregg Inc. announced at a press conference at the team’s 56th […]

SPORTS: Purdue, IU athletic directors have a lot to chew on

November 26, 2007

I’m not an athletic director, but I do get to play one in IBJ. So play along with me: Purdue University should keep Joe Tiller as its football coach. Indiana University should do likewise with Bill Lynch. Add this to what I’m sure is plenty of unsolicited advice directed at Morgan Burke and Rick Greenspan, the respective athletic directors at Purdue and Indiana. They can thank me later. Of course, by the time you read this, the futures of both…

Commentary: A bibliophile’s view of Indianapolis

November 12, 2007

A public library preserves the record of humanity’s intellectual, scientific and artistic achievements, as well as its failures. Those records and the people who facilitate the community’s access to them support democracy, encourage economic development, sustain lifelong learning, and foster an information- and technology-literate community. A community’s investment in its public library system symbolizes the importance of the civic role of public libraries in ensuring an informed society. In our community, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation raised more than…

Indianapolis not-for-profit brings in 15-year-old director

November 12, 2007

An Indianapolis not-for-profit has taken one of the most radical approaches yet toward trying to remain relevant to the next
generation and to perpetuate its mission. It’s put a 15-year-old on its board of directors.

Expanded center luring new conventions: City visitor’s association lining up groups, events for new stadium, bigger center

November 12, 2007

Work on the Indiana Convention Center expansion is at least six months away, but numerous organizations already have reserved their space in anticipation of the larger venue. Construction on the $275 million project is expected to begin next summer and last until 2010. After completion, the center will have 747,370 square feet of tradeshow space, about 253,000 more than it has now, in addition to 183,000 square feet available at the new Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors…

IU forecasts modest growth in 2008

November 1, 2007

Sounding downright Greenspanian, economists at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business said this morning they are “cautiously optimistic” that 2008 will be a year of modest growth. The U.S. economy will grow 2.5 percent, less than the 3 percent they expected for 2007, they said during the business school’s annual breakfast meeting downtown. Indiana’s economy […]

Cyber sky is falling, cyber sky is falling-or not: State, IU make nice with Colorado company leasing lines for vital I-Light network linking Indiana universities

October 29, 2007

Indiana’s network for advanced university research, linked by a web of fiber optics known as I-Light, is now deemed safe by the state and Indiana University. Both have backed away from dire warnings about the network’s future that they issued earlier this month after a key partner in the network changed hands. Indianapolis-based Indiana Fiber Works, which leases hundreds of miles of fiber to I- Light under state contracts not set to expire for nine more years, was purchased Oct….
