  1. Noem must think we are rubes. Republicans blow up the filibuster all the time. They can end this shutdown in five minutes if they desired. Better question is, why aren’t Republicans “winning” the shutdown? It’s almost as though they don’t want the government to be open.

    1. Either to prevent the release of the Epstein files or to use the shutdown to drive more executive branch employees out.

      Probably both actually.

    2. That sounds nice in theory but the reality is more complicated. Let’s set the record straight:

The first real “nuclear option” blowing up the filibuster in key areas was pushed by Harry Reid in 2013 when he eliminated the filibuster for most executive-branch and judicial nominations. That broke a precedent, but it was limited to nominations, not general legislation.

Extending that logic to legislation (i.e. removing the 60-vote threshold for funding bills) is far more radical, unprecedented, and politically dangerous. You can’t just flick a switch and demolish procedure without enormous backlash and internal resistance.

Also, Republicans are well aware critics will charge them with shredding Senate norms, silencing the minority, and centralizing power. That’s not a risk they necessarily want to take especially since their majority is narrow or fractured.

Meanwhile, Democrats are holding out for a lot more than just the health subsidies: their counter-proposal runs about $1.5 trillion, (that’s right TRILLON ) with provisions to permanently extend ACA tax credits, on a program they promised would reduce healthcare cost, reverse immigration-related changes, and more.

So if Republicans could end the shutdown “in five minutes,” why haven’t they? Because the costs, political, procedural, and reputational, are not trivial. It’s not just a matter of will; it’s a question of strategy, optics, and internal politics.

But who could end it in 1 minute would be any 8 democrats that wants to help save America.

    3. Don, exactly what would “any 8 democrats that wants (sic) to help save America” be saving American from? The decimation of congressionally authorized federal programs? The suppression of free speech? Authoritarian rule by the most corrupt president in our 236-year history? No, Don, the shutdown is the Republican (aka MAGA) shutdown. They control the three branches of government. They could in a New-York-minute reopen the federal government, but that would run counter to their anti-government intentions, would it not?

    4. Don B – seems obvious, to me at least, the Dems will give up on restoring the Medicaid cuts if they can get the ACA subsidies restored.

    5. Don – you recall why Harry Reid did that? Because Mitch McConnell was playing the strategy of refusing to let Obama do anything. He filibustered Chuck Hagel, for pete’s sake.

Look, full credit to Republicans for playing this long game of obstruction and changing rules since Obama was elected. They won, and they are continuing to shred norms every day (mid-decade redistricting, anyone?) while the Democrats be the Democrats. But don’t pretend Republicans weren’t the originators of the game, and don’t pretend like they have integrity. That ship sailed for good when they refused to consider the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court under one set of rules they just made up, then created a new set of rules to jam Amy Coney Barrett onto the Court.

    6. And, save America? From what?

Masked secret police who just grab people off the streets based on how they look and disappear them?
The government building a registry of gun owners?
A president who has decided he can kill anyone he likes without due process?

  2. Republicans are indeed winning this shutdown. Trump is on to Ukraine. Non-essential cost cutting. Interest rates are only going lower. Tariff revenues. Sentiment and voter ranks are heading to the center. Left is becoming a joke. Robust stock market time starts now because of high season for holiday travel and holiday purchases for the next 4 months = $$$$ Earnings. I see nothing but upside for the GOP.

It is going to be three more L O N G years for the liberals. Cry more… please. It feeds me.

    1. A.I. stock bubble will burst in the next 1-12 months. Huge losses. “Wealth effect” will cause the wealthy to trim spending and they are the only segment driving consumer spending. Recession, job losses. Israel and Gaza “peace” won’t hold. Russia won’t bargain so no peace there soon. Courts, Including SCOTUS, will deny Nat’l Guard and military deployments in US cities. Epstein files will come out. Say good night MAGAts.

    2. Must not read much, Matt. Most all of the MAGA policies are underwater in opinion polls, usually by wide margins.

    3. I just paid 30% more for Italian Parmesan Regiano cheese to the tune of a $6 Trump Tariff. Interest rates are lower because employment is tanking. An AI bubble is coming and it’s the only thing propping up the stock market because manufacturing is in recession territory. My health insurance is going up by more than $4000 next year and I don’t get ACA tax credits, so this feels like a Republican MAGA Project 2025 tax.

It’s going to be wild and I don’t think in good way.

    1. Bernard, inflation was 13.5% in 1980 when Reagan was elected president, and he got it down to 4.1% by the end of his term eight years later (primarily curbed by the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy). Presidents cannot control inflation, either increases or reductions, or the price of gas. Econ 101.

  3. The former Republican political Party devolved into TRUMP’s MAGA CULT loyal only to their dear leader TRUMP . That is why they have no problem violating our Constitutional laws , disabling our government ,and destroying our National Health Security Systems .

    1. The tariff money has become The Donald’s personnal piggy, he thinks he can spend it anyway he wants without congressional appropriations as defined by law. However The Donald does not believe in the rule of law and all money is his personnally and history has shown as much.

    1. Pete, who is the mastermind of “antifa”? And what president has added more to the national debt that any other president (hint: you likely voted for him three times).

  4. It’s interesting how institutions like airports suddenly “don’t get political” but only when the message happens to make Democrats look bad. When the messaging benefits them or aligns with progressive narratives, those same institutions have no issue taking a stance. The double standard is glaring.

Let’s also be honest about what’s really at stake here. The so-called “healthcare subsidy” Democrats are demanding is nothing more than another prop-up of Obamacare, with subsidies reaching up to 88%. Private companies don’t offer that kind of coverage, and yet taxpayers are expected to foot the bill. I’m already paying for my own healthcare, and through Medicare and Medicaid, I’m already helping fund healthcare for others. I shouldn’t have to keep paying extra so the government can continue propping up a broken system that rewards inefficiency and dependency.

Accountability should go both ways. If Democrats choose to hold government funding hostage over massive subsidies and political leverage, the public deserves to know it, whether airports or federal agencies like it or not.

    1. A clear and overwhelming majority of all Americans want the Obamacare subsidies to continue. Last I saw, the number was over 75% which includes a significant portion of Republican voters.

And look at a map of where Obamacare subsidies go to voters: Texas, Florida, and the rest of the GOP Southern states.

    2. I have no problem with the Noem message if they allow the Democrats to air their own message like in the old days when political parties received equal time. Pushing only one message is the problem (that and that MAGA minions don’t think and only blindly follow). As far as the future, I have two kids entering the job market in the next two years and it is looking to be the absolutely worst job market in decades. Of course, MAGA’s don’t care if its not their kids, or their job, or their problem. We could be entering a period of a lost generation similar to what Japan and other countries have experienced. Again, MAGA’s don’t care because they are too old for it to affect them.

    3. or is it the Republicans holding up government funding. A leading MAGAt member of the US House of Representatives, Ms. Taylor-Greene of Georgia, has publicly stated this is the fault of the GOP leadership. She knows what is coming for her voters if these subsidies are not continued. And I must admit, I never thought Ms. Taylor-Greene and I would be on the same side of any issue. Maybe there is hope for her yet…

I’m curious when a Democratic Administration attempted to post such a blatantly political hatchet job in the airports?

  5. The article is about the airport. That our airport isnt going to cave to the current administration’s consistent spin efforts.
    Thats the piece.
The rabbit hole of the rest of this banter belongs on sicial.media blackhole

    1. If by “bias” you mean comments expressing political opinions grounded in as close to the facts as one can determine, then I’m afraid you’ve seriously misused the term. A bias is an unfounded opinion not based on facts, or a distortion of statistical research usually brought on by testing design. You know, like when Robert Kennedy, JR. and Donald Trump open their mouths or type a message…

But many of the biased opinions expressed here are factual. Voters do overwhelmingly approve of these subsidies, even in Republican states. The impacts of tariffs are real, if not yet fully realized due to the TACO effect.
