  1. If there are 8,100,000 “job openings,” and 234,000 hires per month, that means companies are filling only 2.8% of the available jobs. If they were “true” job openings, you’d assume the other 97.2% of remaining job openings would be an “issue.” Yet, this happens every month. A skeptical person might reasonably wonder whether these “job openings” are “real.”
    FWIW, I think articles about employment would be improved by including the labor participation rate. I know several able-bodied 22-40 year old men staying at home, playing video games, while their wives work. The usual excuse is the cost of child care (yet, the men don’t work nights).
