On a seasonally adjusted basis, the pace of mortgage loan applications grew 7.1 percent for the week ended July 29, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The rate for 30-year mortgages decreased to 4.45 percent from 4.57 percent the previous week. The rate for 15-year mortgages fell to 3.52 percent from 3.67 percent.

Indianapolis police are investigating a deadly crash on the city's west side. About 3:30 p.m. Thursday, a utility truck struck a motorcycle on the Interstate 465 northbound ramp to 56th Street. The unidentified motorcyclist, who was pinned under the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the utility truck, Christopher Schell, 51, of Kokomo, was uninjured. Witnesses say the cyclist was struck while attempting to turn left off the ramp onto West 56th Street.
Shelbyville authorities have ruled the death of a 22-month-old a homicide. Jasper Simpson died Tuesday of blunt-force injuries to the head. Police say medics were called to his home in the Martin Estates Apartment complex in Shelbyville Monday night. The caller told the dispatcher the child was not breathing. Jasper was flown to Riley Hospital, where he died the next day. A neighbor said the boy lived with his mother and her boyfriend. Charges have not been filed.
Indianapolis police are investigating the death of a man found at the bottom of a pool at a northeast-side apartment complex Thursday night. Ryan Lowes, 31, of Indianapolis, was pulled from the pool at about 7 p.m. at the Fall Wood Apartment Complex. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. Police say Lowes was trying to teach his 5-year-old daughter how to swim under water.
