Nine people flee apartment fire

June 6, 2013

Nine people escaped a fire that broke out in a small apartment building at about 3 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of East Washington Street. The fire in the former home caused an estimated $40,000 in damage. One resident jumped from an upstairs window and injured his ankle. The fire’s cause is under investigation.
 

Woman found dead after fire

June 6, 2013

An Indianapolis woman was found dead after an apartment fire Wednesday evening at Whispering Pines Apartments, 4435 N. Mission Drive, near 46th Street and High School Road. Firefighters were called at about 6:45 p.m. and extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. The unit where the body of Marsha Bright, 38, was found suffered heavy smoke and fire damage. Authorities are calling the death and fire suspicious.

Man with AK-47 arrested

June 5, 2013

Police arrested an 18-year-old male with an AK-47 assault rifle near the Indiana State Fairgrounds about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The arrest came after a caller reported seeing a man with a rifle near the old Ivy Tech building at East 38th Street and Orchard Avenue. Three other males were detained, including a 17-year-old who was arrested for violating curfew.

Social club operator charged

June 5, 2013

The operator of an Indianapolis social club was arrested Tuesday and his business shut down following a weekend shooting that left four young people wounded. James Walker, 60, was charged with operating a common nuisance at the Soft Spot Lounge, 1913 E. 46th St. He also was charged with two counts of selling alcohol without a license. Police say more than 100 people were at the lounge for a late-night party when the shootings took place.
