Feds’ $50M loan to automaker could create 900 jobs

The Department of Energy will announce on Monday it is giving a $50M loan to Vehicle Production Group, which makes wheelchair accessible vehicles in Mishawaka. Officials say they expect the loan to create more than 900 jobs in an economically ravaged part of Indiana.

Man holds up Plainfield hotel

A desk clerk at the Plainfield Budget Inn said an armed man tried to rob the hotel Friday morning at about 4 a.m. The clerk told the man there was no cash in the drawer because the hotel only accepts credit cards during overnight hours. Instead, the man grabbed the clerk’s purse from behind the counter and fled the scene in a red vehicle, possibly a Pontiac Grand Am or Oldsmobile Alero.

Good Samaritan confronts purse snatcher

A woman who had her purse snatched outside a Walgreen’s store Friday morning in Beech Grove got it back when a Good Samaritan chased down the thief. The woman was on her way out of the store when a man grabbed her purse and ran to a van across the street. The woman yelled and sounded her car’s alarm, getting the attention of a Marsh Supermarkets employee who chased after the suspect, causing him to drop the purse. The snatcher and another man in the van got away.

Man dies after falling from car on I-465

Police suspect a man who fell to his death from a moving car early Friday morning on Interstate 465 on the east side of Indianapolis may have been pushed out of the vehicle. A truck driver who witnessed the incident at about 1:30 a.m. told police he saw the passenger-side door of a maroon Chevrolet Caprice open and a man fall out onto the highway. The car was moving about 60-65 mph. The victim, who is yet to be identified, was breathing when medics arrived, but later died from massive injuries. Police are searching for the vehicle and the driver.

An Indianapolis company has developed Web-based software that allows college students to read and electronically mark up textbooks, articles, chapters of books, etc. It also has a business model that its owners think will make more money for publishers and slash students’ textbook costs—which average $1,200 a year—in half.
