Organizers are quick to point out that the outdoor event that people refer to as Indy Jazz Fest is actually just the climax of more than a week of musical activity. Yes, on that one day you can see George Benson, Spyro Gyra, Trombone Shorty and a lot more. But there are also performances by the Indy Jazz Fest Band (featuring Cynthia Layne, Everett Green, Mark Buselli and more) at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the 15th and Freda Payne offering a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald at the Madame Walker on the 16th. Retail sales in U.S. stagnate amid poor job market

Retail sales in the U.S. unexpectedly stagnated in August as a lack of jobs restrained shoppers. Chains like Best Buy Co. and Target Corp. say a struggling labor market that’s battered confidence is hurting sales.

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Opening Night Gala

Top-tier pianist Garrick Ohlssohn will be on hand, but the focus will be on new Music Director Krzysztof Urbanski as the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra kicks off the first season of the Urbanski era. He’ll be sharing the podium with Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly in a program that includes music by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bernstein and more. String trio Time for Three, an ISO favorite, will also appear. The symphony’s regular season actually begins before the gala, with performances Sept. 16 and 17 with Ohlssohn and Urbanski. Critics: Patent overhaul could hurt startups

Troopers made 363 DUI arrests over weekend

September 13, 2011

A drunken-driving crackdown over the weekend resulted in 363 arrests for driving while intoxicated. Indiana State Police say the enforcement blitz occurred between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Troopers say they’ve made more than 5,300 such arrests through the first seven months of this year and more than 9,500 during all of 2010.

Two children struck, killed on local roads

Two children died in the Indianapolis area Monday night in separate incidents after they were struck by vehicles. A 2-year-old boy wandering in the road was killed when he was struck by a van at State Road 32 and Eagle Town Road in Hamilton County. Police were still determining why the boy was unsupervised. Meanwhile, 7-year-old Yair Agapito was attending a birthday party when he ran in front of a car about 6:45 p.m. in the 5500 block of Floating Leaf Drive on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The driver’s view of the boy might have been obstructed by parked cars, police said.

Tort claims over state fair stage collapse exceed 20

The state is facing more than 20 potential lawsuits one month after the deadly outdoor stage collapse during the Indiana State Fair.

Fatal accident ties up Binford

September 13, 2011

Binford Boulevard was closed more than two hours Tuesday morning after a fatal car crash. Chong I. Chong, a 75-year-old woman, died in the two-vehicle collision just north of East 52nd Street. According to police, a driver of a van crashed into the side of Chong’s car about 5 a.m. after she pulled in front of him as he traveled on Binford. The van’s driver was uninjured. Police say speed and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash.

Wind-turbine company moving into Evansville plant

A company that makes wind-turbine blades says it will start its first U.S. facility at a former refrigerator plant in Evansville that Whirlpool Corp. closed last year. The business said it could employ up to 400 workers in the area by 2014.

Republic Airways’ stock price continues to sag
