New IU athletic director vows to follow rules closely

November 3, 2008

Fred Glass, formerly a partner
at Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels, wants to make IU known again as a university that strictly follows the rules
and helps all of its student athletes to achieve academically and graduate.

Glass will help IU athletics if he’s allowed to do the job

November 3, 2008

New Indiana University athletic director Fred Glass must return integrity to IU athletics, while being a cheerleader who believes
in accessibility, focus and consistency.

Under Armour to sponsor Lucas Oil Stadium event

November 3, 2008

The NFL has signed Maryland-based Under Armour Inc. as the presenting sponsor for the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, which will
be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Glass uses humor during IU intro

October 28, 2008

Indianapolis attorney Fred Glass demonstrated a keen sense of humor during a press conference held this morning to introduce him as the next Indiana University athletic director. Given the expected sanctions on the…

IU’s AD short list down to three

October 27, 2008

The 13-person search committee charged with finding candidates for Indiana University’s soon-to-be vacated athletic director position has paired its short list down to three candidates, according to two sources within IU’s athletic department.

Indianapolis…

IU AD search: Who’s on first?

October 22, 2008

Where Indiana University is with its search for a new athletic director is anyone’s guess. IU officials are better—much better—at misdirection plays than its beleaguered football team.

Yesterday, IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre told the…

IU seeking funding to help alleviate doctor shortage: Medical school wants extra $5 million from Legislature to tackle projected shortfall of 1,300 physicians by 2025

October 20, 2008

An acute physician shortage in Indiana is driving a request for an additional $5 million in annual funding to expand enrollment at the state’s only medical school. The Indiana University School of Medicine’s Physician Workforce Task Force conducted a study in 2006 that found the state already had 3,500 fewer physicians than it should. Indiana had 12,534 doctors in 2005-a number that remains relatively flat because the medical school churns out the same number of graduates each year. Over the…

SPORTS Bill Benner: Get rid of Lynch? IU has numerous reasons not to

October 20, 2008

Critics are chirping like cicadas and basically singing the same song. One, get rid of Lynch, the sooner the better. And two, spend money, lots of it, on a “big-name” coach. If only it were as simple as the knee-jerks would have you believe. Perhaps they have forgotten, but Indiana has a lame-duck athletic director, Rick Greenspan, who won’t clean out his Assembly Hall office until Dec. 31. A search committee is vetting applicants. I’m told there are exceptional candidates…

Lucas: Stadium worth the cost

October 15, 2008

There have been a fair number of complaints about the new home of the Indianapolis Colts since its opening in August, from the temperature inside the stadium to traffic flow in concourses and…

Mild bump expected in benefits: Despite modest rise in premiums, employers look to pass on costs

October 13, 2008

Several industry surveys predict health insurance expenses will rise at a slower pace in 2009 than in previous years. Many employers, however, are passing the added burden on to workers. Raising deductibles, copayments or out-of-pocket spending limits are the most common ways companies plan to reduce their increases. The trend of passing more of the responsibility to employees has escalated the past five years, giving rise to cheaper alternatives such as consumer-directed health plans. “The tie that binds is that…

Time for IU to move the chains

October 6, 2008

It’s time for Indiana University leaders to make the same commitment to football they’ve made to basketball.

And I don’t want to hear any more excuses about this being a basketball state. I’d say the…

IU makes plans to hatch more businesses: Incubator in Bloomington hopes to duplicate success of local Emerging Technologies Center

October 6, 2008

Ground should be broken late this month or in early November, with completion expected by summer. Cost of the 40,000-square-foot facility-4,000 square feet smaller than the one here-is estimated in the $8 million to $10 million range. While it may be a bit smaller in size, the scope is broader. The new incubator will promote both life sciences companies and information technology firms. That goal differs from the mission of the existing IU Emerging Technologies Center on 10th Street, which…

Colts: Getting a stadium 101

September 22, 2008

Before the Indianapolis Colts beat the Minnesota Vikings on the field Sept. 14, they were schooling them off the field.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and his top lieutenants spent two days the week before…

VIEWPOINT: Sounding out new stadium was painful

September 22, 2008

During the Kenny C h e s n ey / Ke i t h Urban concert on Sept. 13, Lucas Oil Stadium passed its first test as a concert venue. Not acoustically-the sound ranged from barely acceptable to awful, depending on where you sat-but customer service-wise. Anticipating some problems, stadium management had set aside a number of seats for people who complained. When I went to the first-floor ticket window, they replaced my seats in Section 635-upper level, rear of…

Colts roll back stadium opening

September 18, 2008

The Indianapolis Colts have rolled back the opening of Lucas Oil Stadium by two hours on home game dates. LOS will now open two hours before games, instead of the four hours it…

Commentary: Can we Bank on Indianapolis?

September 15, 2008

Whoa. Those figures, based on national averages from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., don’t paint a pretty picture. People without bank accounts tend to keep cash at home or in their pockets, which increases the likelihood of crime. They create a market in which predatory lenders can thrive. They fail to reach their full potential, and so do the cities where they live. We have a problem. Now what can we do about it? We could take a cue from…

IUPUI faces tough decisions over aging sports facilities

August 18, 2008

From 1979 to 1982, IUPUI inherited three world-class athletic facilities that have since hosted Olympic trials and world-record performances by top-flight amateur and professional athletes. But that inheritance has turned into a financial albatross around the university’s neck. It’s grappling with how to pay for their upkeep and the improvements necessary to keep the facilities–and the city–in the hunt for high-profile sporting events.

SPORTS: Our new playground is much more than a stadium

August 18, 2008

Now, I feel like the unlucky one. For the past two years, I’ve been privileged to be part of monthly media tours of Lucas Oil Stadium. I was there as the concrete bowl began to take shape, and as those steel trusses that would frame the retractable roof were put into place. I was there as the brick exterior began to climb, and when the concourses were little more than freshly poured concrete and empty spaces. I was there when…

Stadium’s flexibility should help attract extra events: But some experts say stadiums are still a hard sell

August 11, 2008

Lucas Oil Stadium can be a jack of all trades. Hang rigging from its ceiling, lower built-in sound-absorbing curtains over most of the seats, and it can host a fairly intimate 20,000-seat concert. Roll out the temporary floor to cover the turf, part and pack away one side of the bleachers, and it can stretch to be a convention hall, boasting 183,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space plus 12 meeting rooms, a welcome plaza and party deck. But the…
