Known for its macarons and cakes, Filigree is open three days a week at 6331 Carrollton Ave. during its soft-opening phase.
Owner Laura Lachowecki said she expects the shop will expand to full service hours in June at the 1,200-square-foot building that previously was home to a jewelry store and an adoption agency.
Lachowecki, who was named pastry chef of the year by the American Culinary Federation in 2015 and placed second in an international “pastry queen” competition in Italy in 2018, said Filigree’s pop-up operations outgrew her family’s residence.
“Our basement was full of freezers and racks,” she said. “It got to the point of, ‘We need more space, and I can’t keep taking over bedrooms.’ My kids are thrilled because now their playroom is an actual playroom. It’s no longer baker’s storage.”
Lachowecki, her husband, their 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son live south of Broad Ripple, a neighborhood the chef credits for Filigree’s success.

“I would say 80% of my clientele are from this area because of the farmers market,” Lachowecki said. “If it wasn’t for Broad Ripple, I probably wouldn’t have grown as quickly as I have.”
Before Lachowecki founded Filligree Bakery in 2020, the Wisconsin native worked as a pastry chef at Woodstock Club and Gallery Pastry Shop.
She selected Filigree as the name of her pop-up business as a nod to the hand-piped chocolate accents she incorporated into pastry creations during her culinary-competition days.
But Lachowecki doesn’t want elegant design to imply “out of reach” for customers.
“My goal is to be the price point where you can eat dessert every single day,” she said. “I can make money and pay my staff a livable and comfortable wage, and I can have a livable and comfortable wage. But if it’s Monday or Tuesday, we’re not going to break your budget. You can enjoy your piece of cake or your macaron. That is my goal in life.”
During Filigree’s soft-opening phase, the shop is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The bakery will continue to be a vendor at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market, which is hosted by Broad Ripple Middle School on Saturdays through April. Beginning May 3, the weekly market moves outdoors to Glendale Town Center.
