Just months after announcing plans to move to a new location on the north side of Indianapolis, co-working and social club Maven Space is shutting down.

The entity will close on March 31, co-founder Leslie Bailey said in a social media post Friday. Maven Space has occupied about 15,000 square feet in the historic OneAmerica Gibson Building at 433 N. Capitol Ave. since mid-2022.

“Please know we did not make this decision lightly—Maven Space has been just as much your home as it has ours,” Bailey’s post said.

Maven Space was created to support women who were starting their own businesses after leaving the workforce during the coronavirus pandemic and to give women a “third space” beyond home and work. It’s a sister brand of Indy Maven, a media company founded by Bailey, formerly a reporter at the Indianapolis Star and editor at Indianapolis Monthly, and Amanda Kingsbury, a former Star lifestyle, arts and entertainment editor.

IBJ reported in December that Maven Space planned to move into an 11,000-square-foot, two-story building at 951 E. 86th St. that is part of the Executive North Office Park owned and managed by Indianapolis-based KennMar.

But Bailey said the social club “reached a crossroads with the buildout, which made it impossible to move forward with our lease.” She did not specify what challenges prevented the project from continuing.

The space, which was expected to open later this year, included plans for a cafe, fitness studio, content studio, phone booths, conference rooms, meeting space and private offices, as well as free parking in a dedicated lot.

Bailey’s post said the company’s flagship brand will continue to offer that “third space.”

Indy Maven was founded in late 2019 with the goal of giving central Indiana women lifestyle information and access to events to help them network and grow professionally.

“We believe women need support, connection, and safe spaces now more than ever,” Bailey’s post says, “so we’re excited to reinvest our time, energy, and resources into Indy Maven—and we’d love for you to join us in that.”

Bailey said Indy Maven has partnered with The Indianapolis Propylaeum at 1410 N. Delaware St. to allow Maven members to use the Propylaeum space every Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“We have been honored to serve this community for the past two years. We’re incredibly proud of Maven Space’s role in operating as a hub for local businesses, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and visitors,” Bailey said. “Thank you for trusting us with your events, networks, ideas, and dreams.”

Representatives for Maven Space did not immediately return a call requesting comment Monday afternoon.
