One of the more cruel bills passed into law by the Indiana GOP this year. They really get off on kicking people while they are down.
The homeless ( mostly addicts and mentally unstable, or both ) are a
problem. It was such a problem that Indianapolis was on the verge of losing convention business.
Also, the homeless problem was very bad on the Circle and in front of the
City Market,
The homeless do need help for their substance abuse and mental disorders. But most do NOT want the help.
Thanks for your anecdote, Keith. However, your statements are highly inaccurate and are really just right-wing tropes blaming the homeless for their own circumstances. I went and looked at several different academic studies and it turns out that the majority of the unhoused are not addicted to illicit substances (only ~35% are reported as addicted). It’s just a flimsy excuse for right-wingers to throw poor people in prison and give the private prison pipeline a fresh set of bodies.
The excuse that most “don’t want the help” is also pure BS that you made up. There’s nothing to suggest that this is true. Meanwhile, the State has consistently underhanded the City by gutting programs to prevent homelessness, not funding secular shelters, defunding re-entry programs, and so on. Yet you have the audacity to pretend like homelessness is entirely a personal failure.
Shame on you.
Like most public policies passed by the Republican Supermajority in the past 20 years, this is going to be a catastrophic failure.

But I’m not a right winger. I don’t think either major political party are doing a good job. I also don’t like super majorities with either party.
California and New York have thrown huge amounts of money and resources trying to solve the homeless crisis. The result is the homeless problem has only gotten worse.
If you think I’m heartless, then I think you’re heartless for not considering the ramifications of the homeless on small businesses and neighborhoods.
Are there people that fall on hard times and need a helping hand? YES!!
But to deny that most homelessness is do to mental issues and substance abuse is flat out denial.
