This is a vindictive, petty Democratic council leadership that gives more committee assignments to Republicans than to an actual Democrat, Jesse Brown, because he smoked their supposed shoo-in incumbent. They cannot stand a truly independent thinker.
But if he’s an independent thinker, and not really a Democrat but a Socialist who revels in taking a different approach from that of the party, why would the party reward him with those perks of party membership? Seems if his Socialist views were incompatible with those of the Democratic Party, which in Central Indiana is generally very centrist, it would make sense to give committee assignments to Republicans in an effort to facilitate bi- partisanship. Putting the word “Democratic” in front of Socialist doesn’t make you a Democrat. Socialist ideas may play well in some council districts, but not most. Democrats likely have far more in common with the Republicans than with this gentleman
The “Democratic Socialist” caucus on the Council is even smaller than the Republican caucus. The Democrats don’t have to accommodate the Socialist if they don’t want to. If he gets enough Socialists elected to control the Democratic caucus, then he will get to pick the leaders and make the appointments.
Politics is generally most entertaining when it’s fighting, spinning and damage control within a single party, where the public gets to see and hear it all.
I remember when business executives and professionals were council members. Now we have un-employed phonies who never graduated high school in some instances. Indy has no chance unless something unforeseen and radical occurs.
