The Mid-States Corridor is a symptom of the problem; INDOT gets too large a share of the road funding formula and has funding to do unnecessary things like build new roads while NOT spending money on building roads to last (ex. interstates fall apart) and while cities like Indianapolis are starved.
The true fix would be to fix the funding formula, and folks like Pressel don’t have the courage to make that needed change. And, perhaps, clean house at INDOT since they’d rather buld new roads than fix the ones we have.
“We can’t pick projects”. No, but you can pick and do pick the leadership. And a change, it would appear, is overdue.
Amen. After a trip east on I-70, the best 10 miles of that road in Indiana are about the same as the worst 10 miles across Ohio, WVa, and Pennsylvania.
And INDOT does not know how to spec bridge approaches. As an example, drive just south of US40 on 465 (either direction) over Minnesota. About an 8 inch drop and sudden rise to the overpass deck, then the same on the other side. And the settling is starting to happen on the brand new parts of I-69 as well.
Build it right, and then keep it up. Same thing we all want from our houses. Not complicated. Glad Rep. Pressel is paying attention.
Pressel is part of the problem. He’s over his head as the chief legislator for infrastructure in this state. Find someone from a part of Indiana that understands the importance of investing in infrastructure.
INDOT needs to stop building new until it can properly maintain what it already has in current use. There is talk of the need for implementing toll roads to make-up for funding lost due to lower gas tax revenue, yet they want to spend money on new roads. I get that there are federal dollars involved, yet there are millions in local dollars involved as well and with INDOT cancelling and delaying other projects due to funding this makes absolutely no sense.
Glad to finally see the IBJ looking into the Braun Boondoggle. It’s worth noting that Braun owns a distribution company that runs semi trucks out of Jasper and would potentially benefit from the Mid States Corridor project.
The combined population of the three towns that would gain bypasses, is approximately 25,600 people. So a $3 billion project, which will save an estimated 1-3 minutes on a drive to Indy, would cost $117,187 per resident of those three towns.
The state and other supporters have been stating that the new roadway would be a lot safer, yet there was another major accident on the already completed portion, Friday night in Dale, Indiana. Vehicles keep crashing at the INDOT designed intersection and J-turns.
