IUPUI’s Bantz passed over for UMass president’s job

The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees on Thursday tapped Robert Caret to lead the the five-campus UMass system, choosing him over IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz and Philip Clay, chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fishburn assailant to stay in jail

The man convicted of shooting an Indianapolis police officer will stay behind bars after the Indiana Court of Appeals denied Brian Reese’s attempt to appeal.  Reese was sentenced to 59 years in prison for shooting officer Jason Fishburn in 2008. Judges on the panel rejected Reese’s claims that prosecutors failed to prove their case. Fishburn is back on the job, but suffers from partial paralysis as a result of the shooting.

Teen arrested in Lawrence robbery

Police in Lawrence and Indianapolis caught a 19-year-old suspected of robbing and abducting a motorist Tuesday night. David Miller told police he had stopped his van at Harrison Point Apartments in Lawrence when he was approached by an armed man who ordered him out of the vehicle and demanded his cash. Then a second suspect showed up and ordered Miller back into the van, which they drove to a nearby bank. They then forced the victim to withdraw another $100 before setting him free and fleeing in his vehicle. Investigators tracked down the van in Indianapolis using the GPS feature on the victim’s stolen cell phone. After a short chase, police used a Taser to subdue and arrest Antonio Love, 19. They are still looking for the second suspect, who was not identified.

One dead in I-65 collision

January 13, 2011

A truck driver was killed early Thursday after rear-ending another semi on northbound Interstate 65 in northwest Indianapolis. Police said the unidentified driver struck a truck that was pulling onto I-65 from the shoulder just before 5 a.m. A passenger in that semi was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. Authorities closed the northbound lanes of I-65 to traffic from 71st Street to the I-865 merge during the cleanup, which officials described as difficult because the violent force of the crash left the two trucks interlocked.

Emmis surges as industry anticipates radio sale

Emmis Communications’ share price soared 42 percent on Wednesday, a day after the company reiterated that it is “actively pursuing” the sale of some assets. CEO Jeff Smulyan says it's impossible to call a station sale imminent, but shares gained another 13 percent on Thursday.

A Minnesota judge has signed off on a plea agreement that calls for Boston Scientific Corp.'s Guidant unit to pay $296 million for failing to properly disclose changes made to some implantable heart devices, but added three years of probation to the deal.
