A 79-year-old Indianapolis man said three people burst into the back door of his Fountain Square-area home Sunday about 10 p.m. before beating him up and stealing his wallet. One intruder hit the victim in the chest with the barrel of a rifle and threatened to kill him while the other two searched the home in the 1600 block of Draper Street. The man suffered cuts to his hands and needed treatment at an area hospital.

A man rushing to the airport in his van Tuesday night missed his turn and hit two pedestrians on the sidewalk, killing one. Joseph Anthony Scott Crandall, 20, was driving south on Shelby Street in Fountain Square about 8:30 p.m. when he tried to turn onto Prospect Street and jumped a curb. One pedestrian died on the scene. The other, Aaron Schaler, 35, was taken to Wishard Hospital in stable condition. Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a factor, but said Crandall told them he was in a hurry because he had eight minutes to get to the airport.

A fire damaged two homes and displaced seven Fountain Square residents Sunday afternoon. Indianapolis firefighters were called to the 800 block of Dawson Street about 4:15 p.m. Two homes were already on fire when fire crews arrived and they had to aggressively battle the blaze to prevent it from spreading to other homes. Firefighters rescued multiple pets, including two snakes, two dogs, and a bird, from one of the homes. No injuries were reported. Officials are still investigating a cause of the fire.
Fountain Square Academy, a charter middle and high school with about 270 students, will remain open after Ball State University decided to grant it a charter to continue operating after this school year.
