Local woman tries to set husband on fire

An Indianapolis woman was arrested early Thursday morning after police said she attempted to light her 52-year-old husband on fire. Police responded to the call in the 3500 block of North Ralston Avenue at 12:09 a.m. Thursday. A man told police he was sleeping inside the home when his wife poured rubbing alcohol on him and tried to set him on fire with a lighter. The man said his wife, 48-year-old Esther Phinisee, was intoxicated. Phinisee, who has a prior conviction for manslaughter and is a registered violent sexual predator, was arrested and preliminarily charged with arson, criminal confinement, obstruction of justice and battery.

Police seek gas-station robbery suspect

Indianapolis police are searching for a suspect who held up a northeast-side gas station early Friday morning. The incident happened near Pendleton Pike and Interstate 465 about 1 a.m. Witnesses said the suspect attempted to rob the gas station and, at some point during the robbery, a shot was fired. However, no one was hurt. The suspect fled the scene, heading north on Pendleton Pike.

Authorities gear up for drunk drivers

The Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership and the Indiana DUI Task Force plan to patrol the streets this New Year’s weekend, keeping an eye out for drunk drivers. Members from Indiana’s 35 DUI Task Forces will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols across the state through New Year’s Day. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s Traffic Safety Division said a total of 135 people have died in Indiana so far in 2010 because of an impaired driver. There are typically 50 alcohol-related collisions in Indiana during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period.

Voucher experience positive for one local high school student

State’s job-creation agency claims record year

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. announced Friday that it secured job commitments from a record 219 companies in 2011, an increase from 200 companies in 2010.

Walgreen expects to lose most Express Scripts biz

Drugstore operator Walgreen Co. said Thursday it expects to lose almost 90 percent of prescriptions handled by pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Inc. after it leaves Express Scripts' networks on Jan. 1.

Daniels, Beshear reach agreement on bridges

Construction on two new bridges costing $2.6 billion and spanning the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana could begin in late 2012, with the spans open before the end of the decade, Kentucky and Indiana officials said Thursday.
